Twenty years before the famed 1849 gold rush began in California, prospectors flocked into the Cherokee Nation in north Georgia, marking the  advent of our country's very first gold rush. Their dramatic story is told inside the historic 1836 Lumpkin County Courthouse, the oldest courthouse in Georgia. Dahlonega prospered with this mining activity, and a U.S. Branch Mint opened in 1838, coining more than $6 million in gold before closing in 1861. The museum's exhibits include a set of these coins, a nugget weighing more than five ounces, a large hydraulic cannon and nozzle used to blast soil from mountainsides, a film and gift shop. Visitors can also explore the courthouse features, including beautiful wooden chapel seats from 1889 and the judge's chambers.

OLDE FASHIONED CHRISTMAS IN DAHLONEGA!
Every year, the first weekend of December marks the beginning of the Olde Fashion Christmas celebration, which last the entire month of December.

Friday, November 30, the Square will be lit with hundreds of luminaries. The Kiwanis's sponsored event coincides with the Annual Gallery Walk, and the Merchant Open House. Merchants and galleries open their doors and welcome visitors and locals to enjoy music, refreshments, and the beautifully decorated public Square. The evening is highlighted with live entertainment when Emerald Rose performs their annual show at Cranberry Corners. Everyone is invited to participate in Olde Fashion Christmas.  Even Santa Claus will be there! It's a great time to begin your holiday shopping and eat out in a great restaurant.

On Saturday December 1, the festivities begin with a parade around the Square, and we're expecting it to be a wonderful celebration of the arts, music, Santa and the Chestatee Wildlife Refuge animals.

After the parade, the Annual Lighting of the Square takes place. This is when the magic of Christmas goes into full swing in the historic town. Thousands of white lights are simultaneously set aglow and the official beginning of the Christmas season is set into motion. "Once you've been there, you will not ever want to miss Christmas in Dahlonega.
